We reach out, developing partnerships within the broader community and
providing opportunities for individuals to identify their gifts and passions

We have a lending library, the Open Door newsletter, and many learning
groups:

The Youth Group meets for fun, fellowship, learning and service.

Adult Education groups seek answers through sociable and enjoyable
get-togethers.
Some Adult Ed groups meet Sunday after worship, offering Bible study and/or
exploration of a contemporary issue such as education, poverty, or violence.
On Sunday evenings, from 7:00 - 8:45 pm a Bible Conversation group meets at
224 Washington Avenue.
Adventures in Reading offers a selection of stimulating books on 4 different
themes. The readers meet four times a year to discuss their reading.
A Healing Ministry, led by a layperson passionate about physical and
spiritual wellbeing, includes displays of health information, blood pressure
readings by congregation nurses, and Reiki.

What about kids

What about kids?

Our goal is to introduce children to the love of God in a safe and welcoming
environment.
Nursery care is provided in a loving and consistent environment by a
competent adult and her assistant. Parents may bring children before
worship or anytime during the service.
Other children and youth begin worship with the rest of the church family.
About 20 minutes into the service, children are invited to come forward for
a story and prayer. Children and teachers then go together for time in
classrooms learning and having fun in “Godly Play.” All children return to
services on Communion Sunday to share this experience with their families.
(Children are always welcome to stay with their families during worship.
Coloring books and reading materials are provided.) Following Sunday
services children visit and eat snacks at their own pint-sized tables and
chairs.
Middle and high school youth are led in spiritual exploration by a
teacher/pastor.

Occasional special events - including the annual Jesus’ Birthday Party and
Picnic Sunday with a water slide and games - are designed with kids in mind.

What Happens at Worship

We invite you to join us for our Worship Service at 10am on Sunday mornings
and for a time of fellowship and refreshment afterwards

After announcements for the good of the community, music helps us center
and prepare for worship. The call to worship and first hymn are a joyful
invitation to celebrate our relationship with God, after which we examine
our lives and the pastor offers assurance of God’s forgiveness. During the
“Time for the Children in all of us,” the pastor leads the children in a
short discussion, story and prayer. There are musical offerings by choir
and/or handbells as well as hymns sung by all of us. Readings from the
Bible are followed by the sermon in which the pastor reflects on these
readings. “Joys” and “concerns” of the congregation are included in the
prayer led by the pastor. After the offering, we sing a final hymn. Together
we say our commission to remind ourselves how we want to be and the pastor's
blessing sends us out into the world to live our faith.
Hearing assistance devices are available during worship, as well as large
print hymnals and bulletins. Our building is wheel-chair accessible.

Other worship opportunities include:
Communion for all on the first Sunday of each month.
Quiet meditative evening services with Taize chants during the 6 weeks
of Lent, before Easter
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter services
Christmas eve services

Our Pastor

Pastor - Rev. Mary H. Lee-Clark

Mary has been pastor at Second Congregational Church since 1995. Prior to that she served churches in central and northern New York. She graduated from Harvard Divinity School in 1978 and Middlebury College in 1974. Mary and her husband Bruce have two children, Meredith and Alex.

Pastor Emeritus - Rev. Thomas D. Steffen

Tom was our Pastor for 29 years. He retired in 1994. The congregation voted Tom "Pastor Emeritus". Tom remains a very active member of our congregation, with work on the church grounds, raking autumn leaves, shovelling snow, helping to prepare for the Snoball bazaar in December, making coffee on Sunday morning, and occasionally reading scripture during the worship service.

Weddings and Civil Unions

Q. Can I get married in Second Congregational Church?

If you have never been to worship at Second Congregational Church, we invite you to attend at least one worship service (Sunday morning worship is at 10 o'clock). That way you'll get a sense of who the pastor is, what the church "feels" like, etc. If, after worshipping with us, it feels like a good fit, you should speak with the pastor and set up a time for you and your fiance(e) to meet with her. If you think of a church wedding as simply what is expected, but find "God language" meaningless or problematic, we suggest you consider having your ceremony performed by a Justice of the Peace. If there are no other events scheduled for that day, it may still be possible to hold your wedding in our church.

Q. Can we have our Civil Union performed at Second Congregational Church?

We are proud that our church was the first UCC congregation in Vermont to become an "open and affirming church" meaning that we welcome all people of faith, or in search of faith, without regard to age, race, sex, economic condition, disability or sexual orientation. We invite you attend worship here to get a "feel" for the pastor and place. If you are coming from out of the area, you may contact the pastor about performing your Civil Union. The same guidelines apply as for weddings--If you have, or are actively seeking, a relationship with God, the pastor would be happy to meet with you and your partner. If a civil ceremony would have more integrity for you, we sugggest you consider having your ceremony performed by a Justice of the Peace. Change happens. It’s not an option, really, as much as we might dig in our heels and resist. Change happens. Our bodies are changing constantly, with literally a new skin every 7 years, and every breath a dynamic flow of a concoction of air that moves through and is transformed in our bodies. The earth is in constant rotation around its axis and orbit around our sun, and the whole galaxy is on a pilgrimage outward. Change happens.

In case you hadn’t noticed, there is a fierce campaign going on right now about the change our country needs to be going through. One candidate says derisively that our current course is toward transforming the U.S.–in a bad way–while he promises to restore it, to change it back–in a good way, of course. And that’s just one side of the argument. We haven’t even begun the campaign of both the major parties.

Church historian Phyllis Tickle writes that we are living in a time of profound social, economic, political, and ecological change or emergence. Whether we like it or not, the church is also going through a time of profound change, and we are in the midst of a period of transition. (Paraphrase, The Emerging Church)-- Change happens.–but in the midst of these swirling waters of change, one masthead of changelessness many people want to hold on to is God–unchanging, eternal, absolute. “Jesus Christ is the same today, yesterday, and tomorrow.”

Indeed, that has been the orthodox Christian view of God–changeless, unmoveable–lest divine purity and holiness be tainted. In this view, there is a fundamental discontinuity between God and humanity, or at least it’s only a one-way connect–God can act upon us, but we cannot have an effect upon God. We “wither and perish,” as the hymn says, “but nought changeth Thee.” God has determined everything even before we were created; God’s knowledge is always active and predetermined. “It was meant to be,” we say.

“But such changeless visions of God,” writes Bruce Epperly, a “process theologian,” are bought at a price–God is aloof from our world, insensitive to our pain, and–much worse–the likely source of the evils we experience.” (Process and Faith website, 1/22/12) “Process theology sees the universe as creative, interrelational, dynamic and open to the future. In process theology, God is relational, present in every moment of our lives and in all entities and levels of being. The world is interconnected–in effect a giant ecosystem–where what harms or blesses one, harms or blesses all.” (From Process and Faith home page) Process theology is always seeking new formulations of faith, which is actually what the United Church of Christ states as its understanding of statements of faith–they are to be re-written to have meaning for each generation.

The prophet Jonah was of the opinion that God, although powerful and almighty, was distant from human beings and, in fact, could be escaped from. When told to go to the Assyrian capital of Nineveh and warn them of the certain destruction that God intended for them, Jonah in fact headed the other way in an attempt to get as far away from Ninevah–and God–as possible. Let the destruction begin, Jonah thought. While our passage this morning is just a sliver of this fascinating little theological folk tale–worth reading and a quick read, if you haven’t already–most of us know the part where Jonah gets swallowed up by the whale (or leviathon), and spends 3 days and nights in the belly of the whale. He finally prays to God in his distress, in effect, crying “uncle!” and the whale vomits him up onto shore.

So, as we read this morning, “The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time”–once more, with feeling!-- And the soggy prophet goes to Ninevah and walks the length of the city, crying, “Forty days more and Ninevah shall be overthrown!” Jonah was all for the last part of the message–the destruction--, not so much for the first part, the timing. Frankly, he didn’t see why God should have to wait to destroy the city.

Writer Anne Lamott writes, “You can safely assume you’ve created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do.” (Cited in inward/outward from Church of the Savior) Jonah assumed God hated the people of Ninevah as much as he did and so was distraught, to say the least, when the people listened to him, repented of their evil ways from the king down to their flocks, and God, of all the nerve “changed God’s mind about the calamity that God had said he would bring upon them; and God did not do it.” God changed God’s mind.

“Two key theological points emerge,” writes process theologian Epperly. “First, this passage describes the vision of a changing God, who not only calls but also responds. In the dance of relationship, when we change, God also changes. God is not bound by God’s past eternal or temporal decisions. God is free to act creatively in relationship to our creativity.

Second, this vision begs the question: does God choose to destroy cities and nations, or is there a dynamic synergy of acts and consequences which leads to certain results to which even God must respond?” Process theology says that it’s the latter–“God’s aim or vision for each moment is ‘the best for that impasse.’ (Alfred North Whitehead). (Epperly, op cit.) Crisis, as the Chinese symbol for the word suggests, is both calamity and opportunity. God’s intention for every crisis is opportunity. God respects our autonomy, and sometimes God can only do damage control, instead of pro-actively doing something beautiful or good.

So, rather than pre-ordaining the course of our lives, this view of God sees us in a constant dance with the Divine. At every moment, we are free to act creatively, and God, in turn, responds creatively to our moves. We actually do make a difference; we have the ability to effect change, for good and for ill. We can actually make a difference to God. We see this not only here in the story of Jonah, but also in the story of Abraham, when he convinces God not to destroy Sodom if there are ten righteous persons left in the city. We see it in the story of the Cyro-Phoenician woman who convinces Jesus that her child is as deserving of help as a Jewish child.

Change happens. God is able to do a “new thing” even when we have done our best to fortify the “old thing.”

In the story of the calling of the disciples in Mark’s gospel, Mark simply states that “after John [the Baptist] was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come hear; repent – CHANGE – and believe in the good news.” The change from one important figure to the next happened. In John’s gospel, we get a little more insight into this shift, as John says that Andrew had first been a disciples of John the Baptist’s. When Jesus walks by, John says to his disciples, “Look, here is the Lamb of God,” and the two disciples, including Andrew, follow Jesus to check him out. Andrew is convinced that Jesus is now the one to follow. “At that point of decision,” writes J. Russell Crabtree, “ the momentum in his life shifted in another direction. The capacity to embrace that shift makes St. Andrew a symbol of a dynamic life.” (The Fly in the Ointment, p. x)

In the midst of change, we can feel like we’re being tossed around, first one way then the other, but in this dance with God, it is important to discern which way our momentum is taking us. Is it taking us toward greater intimacy and deeper relationship with God, deeper, richer into Life and Love, or is it taking us in a direction flowing against God’s current, like Jonah, taking us away from Ninevah, where God may have to respond by putting a great fish in our path so that we can stew in our own–and the fish’s–juices until we come to our true selves, our deepest wisdom?

That may be true not only of us as individuals, but also in the life of the church, or in society. At any given moment in the life of our church, for example, we may look at the “state we’re in”–struggling with budgets, stagnating membership numbers, feeling worn out at the edges–and see it as a sure sign of our demise or as an opportunity to learn new ways of doing things, listening for & discerning where God might be leading us in the dance, taking time to explore what new areas of service and witness God might be calling us to.

We may choose to see the current state of our nation and world–with its widespread economic woes, the blessings and curses that technological changes are bringing, the uprisings in the Middle East, in our own country’s “Occupy Wall St.” demonstrations–we may see this as an unraveling of all we hold dear or the birth pangs of a new order. Rather than assuming God has pre-ordained either one, perhaps God is engaged in an increasingly energetic dance with us, longing for our co-creativity with the Divine and our trust in God’s ability to meet us every step of the way.

We can see climate change and the human involvement in it as the inevitable course of progress and evolution, or we can see it and the effects it is having on weather, on island nations and others as an opportunity for “blessed unrest,” as Paul Hawkin calls it in his book of that title. There is an uprising of social, political, grassroots movements, like the earth’s own immune system, engaged in a mighty, holy dance of creativity to reclaim a more healthy relationship with the earth and its peoples.

In the most broad sense, God is immortal, unchanging. If we believe that not only is God within us but that we are in God, it is God who ultimately endures, as we are subject to mortality and death. But even death is not the endpoint, as we learn through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. There is a dynamism, a life, that endures, even beyond death. “We shall be changed,” as the apostle Paul states it so simply and beautifully. “Follow me,” Jesus says. “Join me in the dance.” And so the dance goes on. Thanks be to God!

Making the Stranger Visible (Lorna Cheriton)

After growing up often feeling like a misfit, even (or especially) in my school and family, I found myself drawn to travel, where I felt less lonely being a stranger in a far land where I was not expected to fit into a place in society. I thought of myself as a loner, an introvert, with few abilities to fit in.

However, my dissatisfaction with that life ... my seeking to fill the God-shaped hole I didn't know was in me ... emerged when, traveling in England one cold and dismal winter, I watched Church of England priests stride towards the cathedral I had come to visit. I felt an impulse to run up and ask their help with my unformed questions. Imagine their surprise to have a backpacker run up and ask, not where a famous poet is buried, but the meaning of life!

I did suppress that impulse but, returning to North America and working in New York City, I wrote this -

Lament of the Invisible

After returning to North America and waking up one Sunday with the idea to go to church, I chose the nearest one - Second Congregational. Mary's sermon impressed and moved me – especially how she wove so many strands from different traditions and even from modern writers into her message. The other thing that stands out for me from that first experience here was being warmly welcomed.

At first, church just meant coming here for an hour on Sunday. Then someone asked me to help with a church project. This was a new avenue into this church's life – something beyond the hour on Sunday morning. I agreed, in large part because I thought I might learn something. I was right! Folks offered to help but no one micromanaged my endeavor.

Sometimes I stop and find myself amazed that I am accepted in this community, that I do have a niche. I have found I am energized by involvement in this church family where I've found opportunities to explore faith, to live it and to grow. I have said “Yes” to some challenges while feeling free to decline others. This is a church that has helped me grow into more than I was before and where I feel I belong.

A second trigger element can be placed anywhere within the expanded content that will trigger a collapse. To accomplish this:

The expand tag must have an ID defined

The second internal trigger element must be assigned a class of collapseomatic

To have the arrow point up, rather than down, add the class of colomat-close to the second trigger element

The second trigger element must have and ID that is the same as the trigger pre-appended with “bot-”. For examaple: if the trigger has an ID of “r2d2″ then the second trigger id must look like: id=”bot-r2d2″.

Roll Your Own Collapse Elements

With the plugin installed, any two elements can rolled into a triger/target collapse-o-matic pair. To accomplish this, simply keep the following in mind:

The trigger element has to be wrapped in an element with the class of “collapseomatic” and a unique id.

The target element must have an ID that is the same as the trigger pre-appended with “target-”. For examaple: if the trigger has an ID of “kraftwerk” then the matching target ID must look like: id=”target-kraftwerk”.

A roll-your-own example that places the trigger below the target:

GET POSTS

Provides a [moka-get-posts] shortcode for displaying posts or pages using the get_posts function. The shortcode accepts most parameters that you can pass to the get_posts() function. Additional arguments are: show_fields="post_content,post_excerpt,post_thumbnail" (use post properties; additional fields include post_thumbnail and post_permalink), thumbnail_size="large" (default: "thumbnail" to set post_thumbnail size), and permalink_title (default: "true" to wrap title in permalink). To show posts or pages, add [get-posts category="NN"] in the page or post body. To get pages, use the post_type parameter, e.g., [moka-get-posts post_type="page"]. You can also pass a template using shortcode content. Use the %post_title% format to have fields substituted. Substitution fields most be listed in the "show_fields" argument.

The default values are the same as for the get_posts() function (http://codex.wordpress.org/Template_Tags/get_posts) with the following exceptions:

Note: 'post_parent' also supports a non-standard "this" value, which will use the current post or page as its argument.
